Gazette notification for V2X communication in the 5.9 GHz band (5875–5905 MHz) has officially been published- Akhilesh

Congratulations, everyone 💐💐

Heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, Ministry of Roads Transport & Highways and Department of Telecommunications.

Yesterday, India took a major step toward a future where vehicles & roads don’t just carry traffic, they help prevent crashes.

The Gazette notification for V2X communication in the 5.9 GHz band (5875–5905 MHz) has officially been published, delicensing 30 MHz of spectrum for cellular vehicle connectivity and laying the foundation for connected vehicles, smarter infrastructure, and safer roads across the country.

This is a historic milestone for India’s road safety.

After over 25 months of relentless advocacy with stakeholders and building the ecosystem, I am deeply moved to see this landmark notification become a reality. Every meeting, every submission, every conversation was worth it.

It’s like a dream comes true!

What this means for India –

1) V2X Communication Enabled
Vehicles can now communicate with each other, and later with road infrastructure, and pedestrians in real time, warning drivers about hazards, collisions, and emergencies even before they become visible.

2) Spectrum Delicensed
No individual licence needed for On Board Units (OBUs) operating in this band, making deployment frictionless and scalable across India’s vast road network.

3) Road Safety 2.0 in Action
This is the technological backbone of next-generation road safety systems, cooperative ITS, that moves India from reactive to predictive safety.

4) Level Playing Field for Industry
Device manufacturers, automakers, and ITS solution providers can now innovate and deploy V2X products with regulatory certainty.

5) Global Alignment
India joins EU, US, Japan, and South Korea in harmonising the 5.9 GHz band for ITS signalling to the world that India is a serious player in connected mobility.

Why this matters beyond technology-

👉 India loses nearly 1.7 lakh lives every year on its roads. V2X technology has demonstrated potential to prevent 80% of crashes involving unimpaired drivers.

👉 This notification marks the beginning of the next generation of Intelligent Transport Systems in India, where roads actively help protect every road user.

👉 At the ITS India Forum, we are humbled and grateful to have played even a small role in this journey.

👉 This would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of DoT, MoRTH, the commitment of our road transport authorities, and the collective energy of an entire ecosystem of road safety champions.

To every colleague, collaborator, policymaker, and fellow road safety warrior, heartfelt congratulations and deepest gratitude.

“This notification will save countless lives on our roads. It’s beginning of the next generation ITS in India.”
